Female Crab Spider ( Xysticus cristatus ) with prey, the prey item looks like
one of the Sawfly family but I'm not 100% sure.
If you happen to see this blog Matt, this is the spider I was confusing for the
male of the species ( Misumena vatia ) . Looks like I'm going to have to keep
on searching for a female of that species.

Ah, that explains why you couldn't find any females! This looks like a slightly smaller species to the one I photographed and is one I've never seen. It's a nice shot Andy. Thanks for the plug by the way.

ReplyDeleteHi Matt, yes this is a very small Crab Spider, it's only about 4-5mm long but it's very common and widespread throughout the UK. As
for Misumena vatia, I think I'm going to have to head south to find one, because all the distribution maps show this species in the lower half of the country. Thanks for the feedback and no problem re the plug :)
